GIFT
Purchasing:
1. A customer enters your store and, perhaps after seeing your counter-top
display, asks to purchase a gift card and tells you what
value they would like to put on the card, as gift cards are
generally used as gifts for other people.
2. You take a card from your stack, choose the "gift/loyalty"
function on your credit card terminal and swipe the card through.
The terminal then prompts you to choose the appropriate action
from an on-screen list, which in this case is "activate."
3. Lastly, the terminal prompts you for the amount of value you'd
like to activate the card with and provides you with two copies
of a receipt after you do so.
4. Hand the newly-charged card and a receipt to the customer, who
then pays you for the card in a separate transaction via
cash, credit or check,* and you're done!
Redeeming:
1. Eventually, the recipient of the gift card will come in and
wish to redeem it. They will bring their purchases to the counter
to be checked out. Ring them up as usual on your cash register,
and they will hand you the gift card as payment - this basically
works identically to a credit card transaction.
2. As before, you will choose the "gift/loyalty" function
on your credit card terminal and swipe the card through. Rather
than choosing "activate," though, you're going to
choose "sale" this time around.
3. The terminal will prompt you for the amount of the sale and
then dial out to complete the transaction. The terminal will
then provide you with a receipt which contains the details of
the transaction as well as the remaining balance (if any) on
the card.
*NOTE: Remember that your credit card terminal will automatically keep
track of all gift and loyalty transactions and will display
them in your nightly batch reports, making it extremely easy
for you to balance gift/loyalty and credit sales in a single
glance at the end of the day. |

LOYALTY
Purchasing:
1. A customer enters your store, makes a purchase and asks for
a loyalty card at the same time.
2. Just like you would do with gift cards, you take a card from
your stack, choose the "gift/loyalty" function on
your credit card terminal and swipe the card through. The terminal
then prompts you to choose the appropriate action from an on-screen
list, which in this case is "add points."
3. The number of points assigned is entirely up to you and will
have been decided ahead of time, when the account was originally
set up. For example, you might have decided that a purchase
of $1-$4 is worth one point, $5-$9 is worth two points, etc.
Using this example and assuming that the customer has bought,
say, a cup of coffee for $1.50, you would enter "1"
when prompted to enter the number of points by the terminal.
The terminal then dials out and stores one point on that customer's
account.
The customer then pays you for the transaction normally and
goes on their way.
Adding
Points:
1. The next time that customer comes into your store, they will
hand you their loyalty card along with their purchases.
2. Again, you will choose the "gift/loyalty" function
and then "add points" based on the dollar amount spent.
There are no limits as to how many points can be accrued on
a customer's card (unless you set one).
Redeeming
Points:
1. After a few visits (or a sufficient dollar amount spent in your
store), your customer's card will have enough points on it for
whatever rewards system you set up at the beginning. Be sure
to swipe the card before accepting payment - the terminal will
tell you right away what they've earned.
2. You can then choose to accept the loyalty card as a form of
payment and the appropriate number of points will automatically
be deducted from the card's balance. Simple!
